A crisis of confidence?

A bit of a change in direction for me. I have a sneaking feeling that Elsa is less keen on the highly embellished Farbenmix look than I am so I’m trying to tone it down a little. Since I’ve been having a go at some of the Oliver and s patterns I’ve been looking at a lot of different blogs and flickr groups than my usual places and find that I do actually like some of what I see. Now I’m feeling very unsure about where I go from here. What is your preference?

Here’s the latest sewing- A class picnic blouse with added pocket at Elsa’s request and short sleeves. The sleeves were shortened as per instructions from Adelaide Lemonade here. The fabric is a really nice cotton poplin I got from Spotlight. I think it has a really Euro feel to the print. I teamed it with some puppet show shorts made in a cotton/linen mix from Spotlight also. I gained inspiration (very heavily) from the 3 hours past the edge of the world blog here for these. Instead of the usual gather on the pocket I added a pleat and a lace trim.

Patterns: Oliver and s Class picnic blouse and Puppet show shorts
Fabric/trim: Spotlight

  1. These combo looks fabbo!!!
I think it is even more difficult for the kids in Oz to wear “Farbenmix style” than in Germany, where you can see lots of colourful clothes atm and they don’t stand out that much. Furthermore it is also an age thingy imho. My DD (11) doesn’t want the colourfull stuff for a while now – self made is fine as long as it looks not much different to things the friends are wearing…

    • That’s interesting to hear – I’ve noticed that most of the very colourful stuff is German made. I love the colours but I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with things needing to look like their friend’s clothes.
I’m expecting to hand over more of the decision making about fabrics and colours as she gets older, as I do with her 11 year old brother, just hadn’t anticipated it so soon!

    • Wow, crikey. I don’t think of myself as inspiring at all. I love to make things, just like you. I’m never happier than when putting trims, ribbons, embroideries and fabric together.
Thanks for the message. It feels so great to realise there are people out there who are interested!
